North Georgia is at its most colorful in the fall, and Lisa's guide to experiencing it connects eleven must-see destinations in one scenic circuit: the Bavarian streets of Helen, the orchards of Blue Ridge and Ellijay, the high country around Hiawassee and Blairsville, the waterfalls and pumpkin farms near Dawsonville, and the deep canyon at Tallulah Falls. 01 Helen Oktoberfest, Helen
Helen Oktoberfest brings German food, music, dancing, pretzels, and beer to the mountain town of Helen. Set in an alpine-style village that feels a world away from the rest of Georgia, the celebration is one of the state's most beloved fall traditions. Expect crowded streets, accordion music, and steins raised in toast.
02 Anna Ruby Falls, Helen
Just outside Helen, Anna Ruby Falls features two waterfalls dropping 153 and 50 feet side by side. The sight of twin cascades framed by autumn color is exactly the kind of photo moment this road trip is made for.
03 Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway, Helen
The 41-mile Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway winds through the Chattahoochee National Forest with beautiful overlooks along the way. It is the road trip itself at its best: a slow, winding ribbon of pavement where every curve opens onto a new ridge of color.
04 Mercier Orchards, Blue Ridge
Mercier Orchards in Blue Ridge has been family-run since 1943 and is known for apples, cider, and fried pies. A stop here is a full fall experience: pick up a bag of orchard apples, sip fresh cider, and grab a warm fried pie for the drive.
05 Brasstown Bald, Hiawassee
Brasstown Bald rises 4,784 feet, making it Georgia's highest point. On a clear fall day, the summit views at the top of the state reward every step of the climb with a sea of colored ridges stretching to the horizon.
06 Vogel State Park, Blairsville
Vogel State Park offers wooded trails, mountain scenery, and historic CCC-built structures. The park has a timeless quality, with stone and timber buildings that were crafted by hand and trails that wander beneath a full canopy of fall color.
07 Georgia Apple Festival, Ellijay
The Georgia Apple Festival in Ellijay fills two October weekends with crafts, food, and apple treats. Ellijay is apple country, and the festival turns the whole town into a celebration of the harvest.
08 Amicalola Falls State Park, Dawsonville
Amicalola Falls drops 729 feet down the mountainside, a dramatic centerpiece for any fall outing. The sound of that much water moving through the woods is unforgettable, and the overlooks frame the falls against the surrounding ridges.
09 Burt's Pumpkin Farm, Dawsonville
Burt's Pumpkin Farm has huge pumpkin fields, hayrides, and fall scenery. It is the classic autumn outing for families, with rows of pumpkins stretching across the farm and plenty of backdrops for the perfect seasonal photo.
10 Georgia Mountain Fall Festival, Hiawassee
The Georgia Mountain Fall Festival in Hiawassee runs October 9-11 and October 15-17, 2026, with live music, crafts, food, carnival rides, and Pioneer Village activities. Two full weekends of mountain-town energy make it worth planning the whole trip around.
11 Tallulah Gorge State Park, Tallulah Falls
Tallulah Gorge State Park features dramatic overlooks, an 80-foot suspension bridge, and canyon walls nearly 1,000 feet deep. Standing on that bridge, with the gorge opening up far below, is the kind of moment that closes a road trip on a high note.
